CHAPTER 11

Ariyal

Shoving my way past him, I nearly lose my shit when I have to step over the still body of our chef. I make my way into the dining room, my anxiety alleviating somewhat now that I’m no longer in the same room with them.

I allow my eyes to roam the dining room for the first time since being here. Any other time I’ve been in here, I’ve been made to keep my eyes pointed at the floor. Today, I don’t give a fuck, and that could mean bad shit for me, but oh, well. I’m going to have a look around.

Just like every part of the house, the walls are expensively decorated in monochromatic, gold-plated trinkets that probably cost a fortune. On either side of the room, hanging from gold wiring, are opulent crystal chandeliers. The walls are a light, dove gray, and are complemented by plum floor-length drapes covering floor to ceiling windows.

Facets of light glimmer throughout the room as the natural light cascades throughout the interior. The temperature is pleasant, even knowing the house was built on lies and bloodshed.

My eyes catch on a garden, freshly trimmed and bloomed to perfection with roses, tulips, and other various flowers and shrubbery. It looks like paradise in a small, enclosed space located right behind the house as if they need to hide such majestic artistry from any onlookers that dare venture this far into the countryside.

I vaguely hear the guys quarreling, but I don’t pay them any attention. Right at this moment, I’m taking the time for me, so I don’t freak out. But I’m quickly brought out of my reverie by a demanding presence standing next to me, casting a large shadow over my much smaller frame.

My eyes rise and meet Brett’s. “Would you please come with me?”

I want to say no, or at least shake my head. But I can feel that he’s expecting me to blow him off, so naturally, I want to prove him wrong.

Stupid, I know. But can you blame me? Ever since we met at RPA, they have been one step ahead of me. Just once, I’d like to throw one of them off their game.

I glance back at the door that leads to the kitchen, then back at him, and he gives me a small, encouraging smile. I knew something was up today when I opened my door.

Play your part, Ari. Alaric’s words flow through my head, making the choice for me. If I’m to get out of this alive, then I must give in and play their game. People make sacrifices all the time for the things they want, and while I don’t want to be the one making those sacrifices anymore, it’s not like I have a choice.

My head drops, and I nod.

He steps back, opening the door and gestures for me to go in front of him. I can’t resist the need to look back at Dorran—the only lifeline I have in this house right now.

“Seems we’re long overdue for a chat,” Brett says softly.
